There is so much noise out there these days about what you should/shouldn’t want and do for your life and health.
I was talking with a friend about her solo vacation the other day. She was telling me about all the sights she was seeing, the amazing food she was eating, and all the new people she was connecting with. And then she started to tell me about how she felt like she should’ve had a different experience on the trip. Maybe if she’d traveled with a friend…or experienced more of the night life…or gone to this little town instead of that museum…. And I had to stop her because her trip sounded incredible and I wondered why she was diminishing it by focusing on all the stuff she didn’t do. She told me she felt pressure to do it “correctly,” make the most of every single moment, and have fun in a way that other people would perceive it to be fun.
Most of my clients fall into this trap, too. They focus so much on what they think they “should” be doing in all areas of their lives that they lose sight of what they want to experience. Whether it’s in travel, at work, in relationships, or with what you eat, this can have a significant negative impact on your overall well-being if you don’t question all that extra noise that makes you forget what is most important to you. You end up living your life for everyone else instead of yourself.
There is plenty of (sometimes to much) stuff you have to do in your daily life. If you let yourself be pushed and pulled in different directions by external influences, your time (and life) is going to be spent for you. And you probably won't like how it all turns out if you're not directing it.
If you want to take control of your life and well-being, you have to get clear on what you want and what is most important to you (i.e., your vision and values) to create meaningful goals and a plan for you to move in that direction. A lot of our discontent in life comes from the idea that we should be doing something differently because that’s how we saw it on TikTok or that’s what a friend is doing. But the beauty of humanity is that we are all individual and unique, so what works for others may not work for you, and part of your human journey is carving your own path.
